I completed my Honours degree at UNE in 1979, followed by a PhD 1980–1984. My field of study was toxic plants; specifically inhibitory effects of the alkaloids contained in the seeds of the weed Datura stramonium on the germination and early growth of sunflowers.

Following submission of my PhD in 1984, I pursued a full time career in primary production, combining the breeding of commercial and stud livestock with a successful eco-tourism enterprise on a property east of Guyra. My interest in plant chemicals extended to the development and maintenance of a medicinal herb garden containing over 100 species, and the completion of a Diploma of Naturopathy by distance education with Health Schools Australia 1991–1994.

Between 1994 and 1997, I was engaged in consultancy work with a number of private sector providers of education in Natural Therapies, developing curriculum and preparing documentation for Government accreditation of professional Diploma and Advanced Diploma practitioner courses in Naturopathy and allied therapies. I also completed a Graduate Certificate in Adult Education and Training by distance education with UNE during this period.

In 1996, I joined the academic staff in Human Biology in the Faculty of the Sciences at UNE, and from 1997 to 2001 I was Coordinator of the Health Science program administered by UNE Partnerships and delivered by Human Biology, to students enrolled with private sector providers of Diploma and Advanced Diploma courses in Natural Therapies. I have been a member of the UNE School of Health since July 2001.
